I am a Fitness Instructor at KUT (Kickboxers Ultimate Training) This post is not sponsored by either KUT (Kickboxers Ultimate Training) or IX3 Fitness and Kickboxing.
At a point a year ago, my lower back began aching, I could no longer twist or bend like I used to. I did not like what was happening.. I am striving every day to live a less sedentary life, but what do you do when your professional office job requires long hours, staring at spreadsheets? I also drive a lot and I can find myself sitting for hours in front of a laptop. I've incorporated using a raised desk so that I can stand while on the computer. Even with that in my life, I still find it harder to move around after sitting for long periods of time. My hips, legs and lower back stiffen up. Sometimes it even gets painful.
In 2015 I bought a membership to KUT (Kickboxers Ultimate Training) at TopKic South Riding. I joined the 9 week program. It's a 6 day a week workout that consists of Fitness Kickboxing, for a cardiovascular workout, and Power Bands, for a resistance weight training workout. My KUT Fitness Instructor was Master Sung, a Taekwondo blackbelt. I had never trained in a dojang (martial arts school) before and I certainly never took any instruction from someone with a blackbelt.
My jaw dropped in awe of how high he could kick! With my eyes wide open I would say to myself, "I want to kick like that!" I struggled in the beginning with side kicks, front kicks, knee strikes. Master Sung started off every Kickboxing night with great flexibility warm ups and stretches. I learned flexibility is essential to improving performance, and preventing injury.
Also, we find ourselves sitting longer and longer in our office or driving in a car; flexibility is critical as we get older. In fact, it should be a priority of ours. Keeping our body limber is critical to keeping it healthy.
As the weeks went on, my flexibility improved and I could see the results in my Kickboxing. Fast forward a year later and I have now started training in Taekwondo at TopKick. I fell in love with martial arts through Kickboxing and I was intrigued to learn more. Although I am a KUT Fitness Instructor now, I also remain a KUT member. I take both KUT and Taekwondo classes throughout the week at TopKick. Flexibility is a part of my every day life now.
I recently came across a post in Facebook from Chris Esposito. He is a Personal Trainer at IX3 Fitness and Kickboxing in Boca Raton, Florida. He posted a video the other day entitled, "IX3 30 day Split Challenge." If I would have read his challenge a year ago I would've "liked" it and then scrolled on to the next post. Today, without hesitation I "liked" the post and then commented that I was joining the challenge. Every day I will safely stretch with the intent to get to a full split.
Here's me on Day 1:
I'm starting out my first week by sitting into this straddle with my elbows on the ground. Chris suggested that we stretch while watching t.v. and so I'm doing that as well.
UPDATE: Picture below is me at the end of 30 days. I'm getting there! Maybe just need another 30 days :)
